Not Just Luck
I catch myself saying it without even thinking.
“Wow… that was lucky.”
When something works out. When the timing feels right. When things land a little softer than I expected.
It’s such an easy word to reach for.
But did you ever notice how subjective “luck” can be? Something that feels like good luck at the beginning might not actually turn out to be all that good. And sometimes the things that feel unlucky at first… end up shaping something better than we could have expected.
It’s almost impossible to measure in the moment.
Gen Xers might be smiling a little here… Alanis Morissette wrote an entire song circling this tension. Isn’t it ironic?
Blessed Not Lucky
But blessings are a completely different story. To be blessed and highly favored by God isn’t circumstantial. It isn’t something that shifts with outcomes or changes with perspective. It has very little to do with who I am and everything to do with how good God is.
I’ve had seasons that looked, from the outside, like everything was falling into place. The kind of moments people might call lucky.
But I’ve also had seasons where nothing felt easy. Where things stretched and shifted and didn’t make sense. And strangely… those difficult seasons were the places where I learned to recognize God’s blessing the most. Not because everything was good. But because God was.
Kelly invites us to check our hearts here. In her newest Knowledge Notes for Illustrated Faith, “Lucky Vs. Blessed” she encourages us to pay attention to the focus we place on luck and blessing… and to gently realign it with what is true. Not drifting toward superstition or chance, but anchoring ourselves in the One who is always steady.
Design Team Makes
I love how Sydney (@aredeemedrose) utilized Kelly’s Project Gr8ful ephemera from March to complement her Knowledge Notes Bible entry. Isn’t it the best feeling when we can pull out older supplies and see them in a completely new way? That’s one of the things I love most about Kelly’s designs… they work so beautifully together across seasons.
And Sherri’s (@sherriluvsles) Knowledge Notes booklets always leave me in awe. The stitching this month is just… beautiful. She even included a quick process video showing how she assembled her booklet, which makes it feel so approachable to try for yourself.
If you haven’t started your Knowledge Notes yet, this is your invitation. Pull out your kit, gather a few favorite supplies (or rediscover some older ones), and create from a place of noticing rather than rushing. Let your pages become a reminder that nothing in your story is by chance… and everything is held.
